We’ve all turned up the stereo and blasted a favorite song. And loudly sang along. And probably danced alone in the living room. Maybe even played a little air guitar.

We call singers, songwriters and musicians – “musical artists” for a reason. Their work, their art, can inspire us. Immediately put us in a better mood. Change our attitude.

And, as with any work of art – it’s personal to each of us. You may be moved by Beethoven’s symphony #4. For someone else (me for example) it would be Springsteen’s Born to Run. The music is very different. Yet, to each of us it’s truly amazing art.

Most people probably don’t think of their own work as art. The standard thinking goes, whether you’re an engineer, homemaker, marketer or teacher – aren’t you just doing a job? The answer is – hopefully, no.

Certainly many of the folks at Apple, Nike, Tesla Motors, XCOR, Amazon and probably countless other companies (big and small) feel they’re doing work that matters a great deal. They take their work seriously. They are changing the world with their craft. The very first words in the Wikipedia definition for the word “Art” state: “Art is a diverse range of human activities and the products of those activities”.

When you strive to do your very best work, you’re creating art. You might not have considered that before. And thinking of your work as your “art” – probably seems aggrandizing and even a little disconcerting. After all, it probably isn’t great (yet). But, it is your art.

And with practice (a lot of practice), your “art” may have an impact on others. So keep honing your craft and practicing your art – whatever it is. Most importantly, strive to do great work. Your fans are waiting for your next masterpiece.
